heads of sorrow
conceptual notes
Heads of sorrow was sketched only as heads existing on a single plane, without the simplistic sculpture in the distance or the translucent pond in the foreground. The initial sketch, named “balancing act”, was only of the heads themselves.
Face down and balanced on each other, each head above is dictated by others positioned below. Heads of sorrow also utilizes empty space in the background, balancing the painting overall, and carrying importance to the heads and sculpture. The dark, deep shadows used only in the heads, further push them into primary focus.
In the distance, a sculpture to the right exists to balance the heads in the foreground. This particular sculpture sets to simply outline the rudimentary properties of the heads that are not easily evident. A comparison of man-made versus one naturally existing is illustrated.
